Emily Penn founded eXXpedition in 2014 on a mission to help people understand the true ocean plastic and toxic pollution problem, so they can use their skills to solve it from sea to source.

eXXpedition is a non-profit organisation that runs pioneering all-female sailing research expeditions at sea and virtual voyages on land to investigate the causes of and solutions to ocean plastic pollution.

      • On a mission: To help people understand the true ocean plastic and toxic pollution problem, so they can use their skills to solve it from sea to source.

      • "There is no silver bullet solution to ocean plastic pollution. What's needed is an engaged and empowered mix of people leading solutions to the issue from all angles, bringing different skills and expertise to turn awareness into action."

        Emily Penn

      • Key Aims of eXXpedition

        Support Solutions-based Science

by contributing to world-class scientific studies that are urgently needed to inform upstream solutions and close the loop on plastic waste on land.

        Shift Perceptions

by using our position to inform and educate so that people can better understand the real problem of microplastics and use that to shape solutions and actions.

        Create a Community

by empowering our network of inspiring leaders to create shifts in their community and beyond in order to tackle plastic pollution back on land.

      • eXXpedition Round the World

This mission set out to sail over 38,000 nautical miles, across 30 voyage legs, on board S.V. TravelEdge, to explore plastic and toxic pollution in four of the five gyres - plastic accumulation zones - and the Arctic. Connected by a passion to protect our shared ocean, it was designed to enable 300 women to go to sea as hands-on crew and experience first hand the challenges we face from single-use plastics while contributing to cutting-edge scientific research and solutions-based thinking.
