As part of a University of Hawaii project, supported by NASA and Ocean Voyages Institute, Emily attached a tracker to a large pile of marine debris floating in the North Pacific today; watch the video below! She is sailing as Mission Director on eXXpedition North Pacific 2018 – a voyage from Hawaii to Vancouver and on to Seattle, as part of an all-female crew, looking at plastics and toxics in the ocean.

This tracker will help us understand how marine debris moves, and then the organisation Pacific Gyre will come and clean it up!
Emily says: "Today, we spotted a huge pile of marine debris floating in the North Pacific. I jumped in to attach a tracking device – so we can learn where it goes and recover it later. I was amazed how much more debris was floating beneath the surface... the net had tangled up all sorts of other plastic and attracted marine life. Thankfully, Anna jumped in behind me on 'shark watch' ;)"
